Curriculum Vitae

Peter Ahnert studied biochemistry at the University of Leipzig  (www.uni-leipzig.de ), The Ohio State University ( www.osu.edu ), and the University of Medicine and Dentsitry of New Jersey - Robert Wood Johnson Medical School ( www.umdnj.edu ). He received an MS and a PhD in Biochemistry from The Ohio State University. The main focus of his studies was the elucidation of the mechanism of action of the bacteriophage T7 primase-helicase using binding studies, rapid kinetics, and mathematical modeling. After a short stint at a local site management organization he has been heading the independent junior research group "Molecular Diagnostics - Microarray Techniques" since June 2001.

Research Interests

The main focus of the junior research group "Molecular Diagnostics - Microarray Techniques" is the investigation of the genetics of common complex diseases, in particular rheumatoid arthritis, systemic sclerosis, and dyslexia.

We are attempting to contribute to the elucidation of the genetics of autoimmunity by combining a candidate gene approach with a mapping approach in conjunction with ideas from systems biology, network analysis, and data mining. We use various genotyping techniques.

The goal is a better understanding of the role of common genetic variation in etiology and pathogenesis of complex diseases and the development of diagnostic tools.

In addition, we are involved in the characterization of various brain tumors by cytogenetic and molecular cytogenetic techniques, in particular genome-wide copy number analysis using SNP-arrays. The aim is to better define breaking points for analysis of the involvement of specific pathways in cancerogenesis.

We also apply the techniques established in the group  to various questions in regenerative medicine.
