Working on the booklet ‘Chinepinev – Cuentos de los Baure’

In order to make the work of the documentation project more visible to the Baure people, we decided to publish a collection of short narratives, songs, and personal stories of daily life activities, that we collected during our field trips. Furthermore, some prayers by the SIL were intended to complete the bilingual booklet.

In Baures, the texts were read on local broadcast media and a drawing competition was set, in which children and youths were requested to draw a picture relating to one of the stories or the fiesta of the village. The winning pictures were to be published in the booklet. At the same time, organizations and individuals were asked to contribute to the financing of the booklet. Among the donors were the Municipality of Baures, the Pastoral Indígena in Trinidad, and CIDDEBENI in Trinidad.

Back in Germany, editing work was largely done by our intern Lena Sell. Although we tried to stay as close as possible to the original oral versions, some corrections were inevitable, as for example the deletion of hesitation particles and speech break offs.

In Berlin, a group of 14 students from the Weißensee Art School and the University of Arts integrated in the project by illustrating the texts and composing the whole booklet. They are also working on a trilingual version with German as the third language to be published in Germany. The group consisted of Lisa von Billerbeck, Edith Carron, Jana Dörfelt, Marija Felker, Benjamin Frenzel, Johanna Hochholzer, Paula Kempker, Eva Kretschmer, Pati Marinelli, Birgit Metzger, Sven Neitzel, Paul Paetzel, Joe Villion und Birgit Vogel.

The bilingual version of the booklet (Baure – Spanish) will be distributed in Bolivia. The trilingual version is currently being worked on. Furthermore, the illustrators plan an exhibition of their works in spring 2010.
