Synthesis Club

The 3-day seminar "Synthesis Club" introduces the students in modern synthesis methods, e.g. biodegradable polymers for scaffold applications, carbohydrate production and functionalization.


Day 1: 15 February 2010

Chemistry of Polysaccarides and Glycosaminoglycans (Dr. Matthias Schnabelrauch)

 9:00–10:30 Lecture: Structure and Reactivity of Polysaccharides and Glycosami­noglycans

  • Architecture of polysaccharides and glycosaminoglycans (structure, basical structural principles, nomenclature)
  • Properties and extraction of selected naturally present and semisynthetic Polysaccarides and Glycosaminoglycanes
  • Stability, reactivity, and polyfunctionality of polysaccharides – Consequences for a defined reaction control

10:45–12:15 Lecture: Chemical Reactions on Polysaccharides

  • Basic chemical reactions on polysaccarides for the introduction of special functional groups
  • Homogeneous vs. heterogene reaction control
  • Regioselective functionalizations
  • Chemico-physical charakterization of modified polysaccarides

14:15–15:45 Lecture:  Immobilization Reactions on Polysaccharides and Glycosaminoglycans

  • Techniques for covalent binding of low molecularized molecules on polysaccarides
  • Activation and coupling chemistries
  • Possibilities of non-covalent fixations of biological active substances on polysaccarides
  • Covalent fixations polysaccharides to surfaces

16:00–17:30 Lecture:  Synthesis and Properties of Hydrogels and Hydrogel Coatings on the Basis of Polysaccharides

  • Networkable derivatives of polysaccarides
  • Network reactions at polysaccharides and glycosaminoglycans for the production of hydrogelds and hydrogel coating
  • Characterization of hydrogels
  • Properties and applications of hydrogels basing on polysaccarides

Day 2: 16 February 2010

Synthesis and surface modification of polymers for biomedical applications (Prof. Dr. Michaela Schulz-Siegmund, Dr. Michael Hacker)
