New USPDU article in Analytica Chimica Acta
(November 2014)
The article is entitled:

"A homogeneous assay principle for universal substrate quantification via hydrogen peroxide producing enzymes"

In this study, we describe a universal approach to quantify enzyme substrates via our previously published peroxide detection system.

In this study, we describe a convenient method to increase the coupling yield of antibody-enzyme coupling by enzyme surface charging.

USPDU under new leadership
(August 2014)

After more than seven years, PD Dr. Thole Züchner is leaving USPDU and Leipzig University and has handed over the management of the group to Dr. Thomas Kreisig. Thomas has joined USPDU more than six years ago and has extensive experience in assay development and various fluorescence techniques. He is looking forward to his new role as head of the group and will continue the successful work of USPDU.

The article is entitled:

"Aggregation behavior of chemically synthesized, full-length huntingtin exon 1."

For this collaborative study, USPDU chemically synthesized peptides with a lenghts of up to 109 amino acids. You can read the article here.

USPDU at Analytica 2014, Munich
(April 2014)

Thomas Kreisig and Steffi Franke represent USPDU on this year´s Analytica exhibition and conference in Munich, Germany. Also, USPDU member Steffi Franke will receive an award on this conference (see below).


Thole Züchner passed last step in "Habilitation" process at Leipzig University
(December 2013)


On Dec. 16th 2013, Thole Züchner gave a public lecture on "Microscopic Imaging of proteins and peptides". This was the last step in his Habilitation process. He has therefore been conferred by Leipzig University with the title "Privatdozent". The term "Habilitation" stands for the highest academic qualification level in Germany.

Steffi Franke has been awarded with the  "Bester Absolvent Analytische Chemie" price by the "Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker" (GDCh).
(December 2013)

The award by the Society of German Chemists (GDCh) is given to the best graduate in Analytical Chemistry in a university. Steffi is the second USPDU member to win this prize after Kristin Dobslaff in 2012. Congratulations, Steffi!

Steffi Franke defended her Master thesis
(October 2013)


Steffi started with her Master thesis at USPDU in April 2013. She successfully established a novel enzyme assay based on FRET and the use of oligonucleotides. Congratulations on the excellent result, Steffi!

The latest article by Kreisig, Hoffmann and Zuchner has been highlighted by the journal in the category "World Records in Chemistry" for the "highest FRET efficiency of any immunoassay to date, whilst also being faster (90 s) than any other full serum-compatible, microplate-based homogeneous system currently available". USPDU article chosen for Cover picture

The article describes a homogeneous immunoassay which is capable to detect antigens with high specificity and precision after a total assay time of only 90 seconds in full serum samples. The inside cover picture which has been chosen by the journal emblematises the assay principle.

Thomas Zauner defended his PhD thesis
(March 2013)

Thomas started with his PhD thesis at USPDU in  February 2008 and finished his practical work on it in June 2011. Soon after, he accepted a job offer from industry and now defended his thesis on March 1st 2013. Congratulations, Dr. Zauner!

USPDU members attend HUPO 2012 conference in Boston, USA (September 2012)
Thomas Kreisig and Agneta Prasse are attending this years HUPO conference in Boston, USA and present their data on novel homogeneous immunoassays and highly sensitive enzyme assays.

Several USPDU members attend "Advanced Presentation Skills" course (August 2012)
The two-day course is given by Prof. Roger Gläser, Leipzig University and was organized by USPDU. Participants will have the chance to practice their presentation skills based on a video analysis (August 21st-22nd).

Thole Zuechner talks on MedTech Pharma Congress 2012
(July 2012)

Thole Zuechner has been invited as a plenary speaker on this years MedTech Pharma Congress in Nuernberg, Germany. He will talk about two recent diagnostic setups in the field of point-of-care diagnostics and peptide-protein interaction assays. (July 5th 2012)

Several USPDU members present talks and posters on conferences in June: Thole Zuechner and Kristin Dobslaff are invited to give talks about new protein assay developments based on different luminescence strategies on this years ISLS conference in Barcelona while Thomas Kreisig and Agneta Prasse will present posters on fast homogeneous assays and protease detection on the Saxon biotechnology symposium 2012.

State secretary Dr. Helge Braun (BMBF) visits USPDU (May 2012)

On 2nd of May, parliamentary state secretary Dr. Helge Braun of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research paid a visit to USPDU to talk about the ongoing Go-Bio project of the group. Aim of the project is the development of highly specific, sensitive and fast immunoassays. In his talk, Thole Zuechner gave an overview about the development of the group since 2007 and highlighted the latest results and their potential for future applications in the field of diagnostics. The funding program “Go-Bio” is a highly competitive federal funding scheme of the German Ministry of Research and Education (BMBF). The USPDU is among six groups in Germany receiving this major grant. Initially 93 applications were sent in for evaluation. Press release here.

Prof. Ron Wetzel visits USPDU (August 2011)
Prof. Ronald Wetzel from the University of Pittsburgh is visiting USPDU today (August 29th) and is giving a talk about his recent work on huntingtin aggregation mechanisms. You can find the flyer about his talk here.

USPDU receives major grant (>2 Mio. Euros) from the German Ministry of Research and Education (BMBF)
(June 2011)

The funding program “Go-Bio” is a highly competitive federal funding scheme of the German Ministry of Research and Education (BMBF). The USPDU is one of six groups in Germany receiving this major grant. Initially 93 applications were sent in for evaluation. Our grant program aims at further improvements of our already existing protein detection assays. This work will mostly be based on our recent advances in the areas of rational enzyme design and fluorescence techniques. On May 26th, Thole Zuechner as the applicant for this award took part in the official prize ceremony hosted by the state secretary Dr. Georg Schütte took place in Munich. The team for this research program will consist of four postdocs supported by two PhD students and two technical employees.

The USPDU member Thomas Kreisig won one of the poster prizes of this years Research Festival Leipzig 2010. His poster "A rapid and simple homogeneous competitive immunoassay based on FRET" was one of the selected posters out of 340 posters in total. Congratulations Thomas!
