Spatial Semantics of Geography in the 19th and 20th Centuries

The project examines scientific journals of international geography. Thereby, we want to show how geographical semantics of space, increasingly based on imaginations, formed and stabilized spatial formats and modified spatial orders. To reach that goal, we use a coding method developed within the project that combines various analytical dimensions. To analyse the resulting data, we also use methods from digital humanities. We thus identify modes of spatialization dominant across national borders as well as their differences from area to area and their evolution over time.
