Microfluidics, liquid beams, and mass spectrometry  

The Abel group has pioneered liquid beam desorption mass spectrometry to study large biomolecules and complex organic reactions in real time. We recently applied liquid beam IR-laser desorption mass spectrometry for monitoring educts, intermediates and products of complex organic reactions in time on multiple timescales, directly from the liquid phase. Lab-on-a-chip technology can provide unique insights into (bio-)chemical processes taking place in liquid micro-compartments. Similar ideas and technologies have also been in the focus of the research unit FOR 2177 of the German Science Foundation (DFG).
