Who are we at Åbo Akademi University?

The History Programme at the Faculty of Arts, Psychology and Theology of Åbo Akademi University consists of two sub-programmes, general history and Nordic history. Our staff consists of two professors, one in Nordic history (associate professor Johanna Ilmakunnas) and the other in general history (professor Holger Weiss), a lecturer in Nordic history (Docent Ann-Catrin Östman), a university teacher in general history (Docent Laura Hollsten) as well as several docents, part-time teachers and researchers. The sub-programme in general history is focusing on global history; research on global history is coordinated through the Global History Laboratory. You find us on Facebook and our researchers and students are writing blogs in Swedish on Historkerbloggen.

Doctoral and postdoctoral research at ÅAU History addresses a wide range of topics, ranging from early modern to late/hypermodern Finnish, Nordic, European, Atlantic, African and global history. Thematically, we explore political, environmental, social, consumption, (new) military, gender, labour, and cultural history, often from a transnational, intersectional and postcolonial as well as multi- and cross-disciplinary perspective. In total, there are about 20 doctoral and postdoctoral researchers attached to the History Programme, see https://www.abo.fi/en/history-staff/
