The University of Sheffield (Departments of Physics and Astronomy and Electronic and Electrical Engineering) contributes to the growth, optical characterisation and devices components of the network. In addition we contribute to the scientific workpackages on long wavelength, intersublevel and single photon devices. We grow In(Ga)As quantum dots by MBE and are investigating techniques to extend emission wavelengths beyond 1.3 µm by the addition of N and/or Sb containing layers. We perform extensive optical spectroscopy, both cw and time resolved, on both single quantum dots and ensembles. Current interests include the study of spin effects, vertically coupled quantum dots and the incorporation of quantum dots in microcavity-pillar structures. Our device programmes include the development of 1.3 µm quantum dot lasers and single quantum dots for single photon sources.
