The Solid State Electronics Institute, the Photonics Institute and the Center for Micro- and Nanostructures at the TU Vienna have a profound experience in the field of intersublevel physics, devices and time-resolved spectroscopy. The center holds a fully equipped III-V growth and semiconductor processing facility. Within this NoE we are combining our intersubband device experience in quantum cascade lasers and QD-SL infrared photodetectors with ultra-fast spectroscopy in the mid-infrared and THz regime. We are investigating intersublevel capture and relaxation mechanisms in self-assembled QDs, and are working towards an integration of QDs into novel intraband devices such as QD mid-infrared cascade emitters and single-dot photodetectors. To achieve this goal we are also focusing on the growth of self-assembled quantum dots in an AlGaAs matrix and on nanopatterned substrates, to achieve a more favourable energy of the dots and a more uniform size distribution respectively.
