Italian Opera in Global and Transnational Perspective: Reimagining Italianità in the Long Nineteenth Century

Axel Körner

The paper is work in progress and will form the introduction to a collaborative volume co-edited by Axel Körner (UCL) and Paulo M. Kuehl (Campinas, Brazil), to be published by Cambridge University Press in 2021. Based on an international research project funded by the Leverhulme Trust, the book investigates the impact of transnational musical exchanges on notions of national identity associated with the production and reception of Italian opera in the world. Covering different parts of Europe, Latin America and Asia, the volume brings together twelve case studies to exemplify the effects of the European and global expansion of Italian opera during the long nineteenth century, and to discuss the significance of this process for debates on opera at home in Italy. As a consequence of transnational exchanges between composers, impresari, musicians and audiences, ideas of operatic italianità constantly changed and had to be reconfigured, reflecting the radically transformative experience of time and space that throughout the nineteenth century turned opera into a global aesthetic commodity. The introduction to this book places the project within its historiographical and musicological contexts, develops a theoretical framework to investigate the globalisation of Italian opera, and looks at how changing notions of italianità evolved and were applied to ideas of opera.

Weltliteratur als Wissenskonfiguration. Versuch einer Bilanz aus postkolonialistischer Perspektive

Elke Sturm-Trigonakis

Promoting Chinese Theater in late 19th Century Europe: Chen Jitong’s Inheritance and Recreation

QI Yue

From Jesuit missionary Joseph Henri Marie de Prémare to sinologists Stanislas Julien and Antoine Bazin, various Chinese theatrical scripts were successively translated in the 18th and 19th centuries. This resulted in the creation of a few Chinese themed French dramas, reinforcing exotic stereotypes while also promoting stage innovations. In this context, the French-speaking Chinese diplomat Chen Jitong undoubtedly brought new perspectives to his contemporary European public and sinology community, with a monograph on Chinese theatre, a couple of essays on general theatre arts, and a one-act play published in different contexts around 1900.
This presentation aims to characterize the Sino-European dramatic exchanges in the late 19th century, through a case study on the contributions made by the diplomat-writer Chen Jitong. By focusing on his ideals, practices, and challenges, we attempt to interpret the misunderstandings, mutations, and resemantisations in the process of promoting Chinese theatre to the West. We will first briefly review the background of Chinese theatre studies, starting with a systematic introduction of Yuan opera repertoire to Europe in the early 19th century, and the subsequent publication of several plays inspired by certain translations. These bookish knowledges, together with a huge European literature from ancient Greece and Rome to contemporary France, constitute a direct source of material for Chen Jitong’s Le Théâtre des chinois. Then we will conduct a further analysis of this ambitious “comparative study of morals”, to discover Chen’s research methodology beyond comparatism or ethnography, “francized” narrative strategies, engagement in contemporary diplomacy, and eventual contribution to the theorization of Chinese theatre practices. Finally, we will examine the creation and circulation of L’Amour héroïque, a one-act vaudeville on traditional Chinese theme composed by Chen himself and published respectively in Paris (1891), Imperial Shanghai (1904), and Republican Beijing (1922), to reveal how this intercultural author went from theory to practice, reinterpreting a classic playsets with dual cultural heritage and enriching the fin-de-siècle dramatic literature.

Semiotic Work and the Emergence of Culture

Kobus Marais

I have argued elsewhere (Marais, 2019) that translation can be limited neither to interlingual translation nor to anthropo-semiotics. Sebeok has made it clear that semiosis is co-emergent with life, which means that translation should be able to account for all forms of meaning-making that occur between different semiotic systems. In this presentation, I further explore the implications of this line of thinking, in particular exploring the role of space in translation. For this presentation, I explore the implications of the notion of ‘coupled system’ from cognitive semiotics and biosemiotics, arguing that living organisms are coupled to their environment and depend on their environment for survival. This means that the physical and social-cultural space in which translation takes place plays a constitutive role. Organisms are per definition open systems that depend on their environments for their survival, not only materially but also as far as information is concerned. Following Deacon, I explore the crucial informational link between organism and environment, thereby preparing for an ecological view of translation. The difficult part of this line of thinking is to work out the implications of this argument for the humanities. In the natural sciences, the goal is to explain how meaning, value, semiosis emerged from matter in order to propose a unified view of reality. The question is now: How should the humanities respond to this process? I shall use the last part of this presentation of ponder some of the questions that would be relevant for a humanities response to emergentist thinking in the natural sciences. One such question would be about the ways in which physical space constrains meaning-making. I shall also present a brief sample of empirical work that I am doing based on this conceptualization.

Multiple Spaces. Cultural Transfer and Social Historical Networks in Spanish-Speaking Modern Cultural Processes (1898–1959)

Diana Roig-Sanz

Modernity has often been seen as an autonomous Western invention. However, Western Europeans were not the only makers of cultural history, and centres and peripheries are not fixed and permanent, but dynamic and evolving. For decades, debate over the centre-periphery model, dominant over dominated, North versus South has raged amongst scholars, and a consensus on the role of Southern Europe and non-European regions in modern cultural processes has been established. However, we still need source-based, empirical research, and appropriate tools and methods to historically analyse their connections, roles, continuities, and discontinuities in specific periods and disciplines, between spaces and over time. Within the framework of cultural transfer and global literary studies, this paper proposes to examine how social historical networks and the experience of movement in a broad sense impacts in the production and distribution of cultural knowledge. Specifically, I will use some of the preliminary results of my ongoing ERC StG project „Social Networks of the Past. Mapping Hispanic and Lusophone Modernity, 1898–1959“, to test the agency of Ibero-American cultural mediators being active individuals or collective agents (for example, cultural institutions, literary journals, or film clubs). Within an historical and sociological approach, this paper advances the hypothesis that social networks enabled Ibero-American mediators to play a prominent role in a transnational and mobile elite, helping them revitalize European culture, but also their local milieu. This paper analyses the wide range of new meanings that accompany this broad idea of movement that we can understand, with some nuances, as circulation, mobility, connectivity, interaction, or displacement, as well as the assumption of multiple spaces where cultural knowledge and producers of knowledge flow and circulate in different directions and through different channels. Space is a driven force in intercultural transfers, but this presentation goes against the idea of a sole or central space but multiple and decentred spaces, not always related to a European historiography or to nation states, but to other units of analysis (cities, regions, rivers, mountains) that allows us to rediscover these locations with a new light and in large-scale contexts.

Philhellenism and Geopolitics: Friedrich Thiersch’s De l’état actuel de la Grèce (1833) as a European Project

Marilisa Mitsou

Just after the formation of the independent Greek state, Friedrich Thiersch proposed in his work “De l’état actuel de la Grèce et des moyens d’arriver à sa restauration” (1833) some methods of modernizing Greece, while trying to respect traditional institutions and customs and without transforming the country into a Bavarian province. His geopolitical vision of the South-East Mediterranean includes not only a compulsory extension of the Greek Kingdom towards the North and the East, “in the great interest of Europe and the peoples of the East”, but also a prudent colonization of the territories of Greece, in order to train the locals and strengthen the industry and the resources of the kingdom. The settlement plans − farming and town colonies settled by foreigners and non-native Greeks − were the only common point of Thiersch’s philhellenic approach with the imperialist policy of the Bureau of Political Economy (staatswirtschaftliches Bureau) of the Bavarian Regency in the third decade of the 19th century in Greece.

Le philhellénisme: vue d’ensemble et ramifications

George Tolias

Cultural Transfers in the German Entertainment Industries – Production Networks and Imagined Geographies

Antje Dietze

Over the course of the 19th century, modern entertainment industries grew rapidly and became an important realm of cultural transfers and internationalization. They brought mass audiences in contact with cultural products and imagery from all over the world. One of the largest live entertainment industries in Germany at the time was variety theater. It emerged in the decades marked both by the consolidation of the recently united German nation-state and a phase of intense globalization between the 1880s and the First World War. This was a very transnational business – it relied on a high mobility of performers and constant transfers of new formats and attractions. The presentation traces the emergence of these networks and institutions of cultural transfer and asks how they shaped Germany’s relation to the world. It brings together reflections on cultural transfer as a space-producing process with recent studies in transnational history on the geographies of entanglements and the specific forms and patterns that shaped the circulation of knowledge, people or goods. In a first step, I lay out the geographical contours of the production networks, using GIS-based mapping. Secondly, I relate these findings to the imagined geographies that were presented in the variety shows. This leads to a reflection of the different dimensions of cultural transfer and the way it reconfigures the relationship of both the production networks and the produced images with the nation and the world.

Cultural Transfer in Eastern Europe at the Beginning of the 19th Century: The Example of University of Vilnius (Approaches, Research Results, and Research Gaps)

Monika Bednarczuk

How did cultural transfer processes take place on the peripheries of the enlightened and romantic Europe? What role did German and Austrian scholars, elite migration, and multilingualism play in Vilnius, at a Polish-speaking university under the Russian rule? How did the provincial professors, lecturers, and literati deal with new (imported) cultural phenomena, patterns of thought, and the knowledge produced in Western Europe? What steps did they take to be perceived as equal actors in the European cultural and university landscape? And last but not least: To what extent was their operational field determined by the intertwinement of power and knowledge (education)?
The University of Vilnius (founded in 1578) is an exciting object of research for several reasons; suffice it to say that it was the largest university in the Russian Empire at the beginning of the 19th century. It also attracted scholars from Western Europe, and the languages of instruction were – in addition to Polish – French and Latin.
The starting point and the point of reference of the paper is the volume Kulturtransfer in der Provinz: Wilna als Ort deutscher Kultur und Wissenschaft, 1803–1832 (authored by Monika Bednarczuk, Katarzyna Filutowska, Marta Kopij-Weiß, and Mirja Lecke, Harrassowitz 2020) [Cultural Transfer in the Province: Vilnius as a Site of German Culture and Science, 1803–1832]. This volume is the result of a research project involving four researchers (the PI of the project was Monika Bednarczuk). Its aim was to investigate the circulation of ideas between German (and, to a lesser extent, Austrian) universities and University of Vilnius. Special consideration was given to philosophy, literature, classical philology and oriental studies, as well as the natural sciences. In my presentation, I will summarize the most important findings and indicate the advantages of applying the cultural transfer approach to studying the dissemination of knowledge in the early 19th century. I will also identify some major research gaps and problems In this field. nderen werde ich auf die größten Lücken und Hindernisse in der Forschung eingehen.

From Racism “then“ and “there” to Racism “here and now”: a Central European History of Knowledge on “Racism as a Problem”

Miša Krenčeyová

What knowledge is available to white persons to understand racism, name it, make sense of it and grasp it theoretically? Where does this knowledge come from and how does its availability change over time? And how does it change in relation to global, regional, and local power dynamics and broad processes of change? What happens with knowledge that is generated, processed or remembered when it does not fit into official frames of meaning?
Within a research project I am developing, I want to approach these questions with regards to the Central European region on the Eastern and Western side of the Iron Curtain between 1945 and 2000 – in Czechoslovakia and the German Democratic Republic as well as the Federal Republic of Germany and Austria. In order to understand the historical dynamics of “knowledge about racism” in a “divided” Europe, I focus on links established between problematising racism and the construction of a positional identity. The latter relates to the “positionality” of actors within geopolitical power relations as well as their discursive position – the ideological location of their participation in discourse. I assume that knowledge about racism is “situated knowledge”, which is being developed, shifted, negotiated or negated according to this positionality. In the lecture, I will present the framework of the research project as well as preliminary insights.
