Financialising City Statecraft and Infrastructure

Andy Pike holds the Sir Henry Daysh Chair of Regional Development Studies at the Centre for Urban and Regional Development Studies (CURDS), Newcastle University. His central research interest is the geographical political economy of local, regional and urban development, governance and policy.
Among the areas of recent work, the focus on financialisation, the local state and infrastructure figures prominently. Together with Peter O’Brien, Tom Strickland, Graham Thrower and John Tomaney he published Financialising City Statecraft and Infrastructure in 2019. The book addresses the struggles of national and local states to fund, finance and govern urban infrastructure. It develops fresh thinking on financialisation and city statecraft to explain the socially and spatially uneven mixing of managerial, entrepreneurial and financialised city governance in austerity and limited decentralisation across England.
