Blickwinkel: Nation & Nationalstaat, Territorium und Volkswirtschaft als Raumformate

Ursula Rao (MPI Halle) & Matthias Middell (Leipzig U)

The weekly colloquium of the Collaborative Research Centre provides a forum for presentations by external guests as well as by members of the SFB 1199 within a tailored thematic framework. The format helps to create a common ground for discussion between guests, the Collaborative Research Centre, as well as the wider academic public. The complete program can be found here.

This weeks session will be lead by Ursulao Rao and Matthias Middell. They will discuss one of the key terms of the SFB’s work: Spatial formats is one of the central notions of the SFB 1199 that captures the establishment, institutionalization, (routine) performance, and intersubjective reflection of social interaction under the global condition. They are established through practices that involve imaginations, including descriptions and visualizations. This session will discuss how concepts like nation, the nation state, and territory serve as a prime example of using the SFB’s heuristic and terminology to describe transformations across space and time. Special reference will be made to how our understanding of related concepts like e.g. national economy and developmental state will profit by being regarded as spatial format.
