Spheres of Production and Circulation: Mass Culture between Europe and North America, 1830s to 1930s

This project investigates modern mass culture in processes of respatialization, focusing on interactions between Europe and North America from the 1830s to the 1930s. Cultural producers established cross-border production and distribution networks that, at the same time, offered imaginations of “the world”, allowing mass audiences to experience and reflect the sociospatial transformations at the time. The project maps entanglements in different spheres of the cultural economy in a long-term perspective. It contributes to a global social history of spatial entrepreneurs in historically changing spatial orders.
