Abstract
In this working paper, the notion of spatial formats, central to the programme of the SFB 1199, is put into context by referring to the state of the art in various disciplines, ranging from new political geography to anthropology to social sciences to global history. It demonstrates the potential of this category for the analysis of historical developments under the global condition, and it describes avenues for further research.
