Interdisciplinary Approaches to Movement and Displacement across the Mediterranean: the PIMo COST Action

José María Pérez Fernández

This presentation will provide a general introduction to the PIMo COST Action. It will first describe the different lines of research, the academic meetings, the training schools, the multimedia dissemination activities, and the research outcomes of this interdisciplinary project chaired from Florence University by Prof. Giovanni Tarantino, and whose general title is People in Motion: Entangled Histories of Displacement across the Mediterranean (1492-1923). The second part of the presentation will focus on one of the four work groups of the Action, Paper in Motion. It will then conclude by announcing two new book series, one published by Brill (Translating Cultures in the Early Modern World) and another one by Brepols (Histories in Motion), which are among some of the most important spin-offs that will continue after the action concludes in 2022.

Linguistic Encounters. Christian-Muslim Interactions on the East African Coast (19th century)

Clélia Coret

This presentation examines the exchanges related to African languages that took place in Kenya in a German evangelist mission established from 1887 onwards. I examine more specifically the modalities which made possible the sharing of knowledge between German missionaries and Muslim scholars from the East African coast – knowledge which extended far beyond the learning of languages in Eastern Africa. Studied in their daily practices (Jacob, 2007-2010), language contacts are a starting point for understanding the conditions of knowledge production and how Europeans and Africans have appropriated them. I will focus particularly on the knowledge transmitted about Islam and Christianity; the skills of writing in the Latin and Arabic alphabets; and the co-production of linguistic system which, while based on European models (grammars, dictionaries), was adapted through contact with African languages and their native speakers.

Colonial Science between Kleinstaaterei and the Word of God: The 1838 Lutheran Mission to South Australia

James McElvenny

In this talk, I present a case study of the first Lutheran mission to South Australia and look at the entanglements it reveals between scientific data collection in the colonial field, Protestant missionary efforts, and the political jockeying and pursuit of prestige among the German states of the nineteenth century. The focus lies on Christian Gottlob Teichelmann (1807–1888) and Clamor Wilhelm Schürmann (1815–1893), sent in 1838 by the Dresden Missionary Society to proselytize the Aboriginal inhabitants of Adelaide. Their ordination in the small central German duchy of Altenburg led them into an association with the local Naturforschende Gesellschaft des Osterlandes and the nobleman Hans Conon von der Gabelentz (1807–1874), senior government official in the duchy and renowned gentleman scholar. Through this association, Teichelmann and Schürmann sent back to Altenburg natural scientific specimens and linguistic and ethnographic documentation from South Australia. I will examine how typical this arrangement was in the scientific landscape of the time and  the place of the data and specimens collected by the missionaries in the circulation of knowledge between the colonial field and European metropole.

From Medieval Spain to the Bight of Benin, from Venus to the God Legba: Transfer and Appropriation of a Geomantic Sign

Erwan Dianteill

Intellectuals as Cultural Mediators: the Role of Displacements to Produce European and Latin America Modernity

Aurea Mota

This paper develops displacement as concept for the understanding of how time and space become connected through human agency in modernity. It has been predominantly accepted that the emergency of modernity represents a moment of rupture that happened between the eighteenth and the nineteenth in which expectations of a projected human future became part of historical experience (Koselleck). In this paper displacement will be developed as a concept to understand how human beings from different parts of the Europe and Latin American in different times have been linking the modern global space through their displacement creating very specific cultural transfer flows between those areas, how it has constituted the modern structure of cultural entanglements. A conceptual analysis of the cultural transfers will be done through the discussion of the life and works of writers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries such as Nisia Floresta (1803-1844) and Flora Tristan (1810-1885), and Clarice Lispector (1920-1977). The paper will expand the idea of displacement as (self)transformation and deconstruction, as it appears in the work of Jacques Derrida, to the domains of modern global cultural transfer studies. By conceptualising displacement in more general and conceptual term the concept has a wider significance in the self-constitution of modernity and enlarge our understanding about the agency of human beings when it comes to the domain of cultural transformation.

The Cultural Areas Reached by Georgian Books in Translation: Germany and the Caucasus – Black Sea Region (1991–2019)

Ana Kvirikashvili Chitishvili

This presentation aims to look at the main cultural areas (Espagne 2013) where Georgian literature has been translated since Georgia’s independence from the Soviet Union to the present day, when Georgian literature has gained some global visibility through important milestones, such as being the Guest of Honour at Frankfurt Book Fair in 2018. Is this recent event as significant in initiating cultural exchanges as usually thought (Dujovne and Sorá 2010; Sorá 2013, 2016; Dujovne 2016; Woolard 2016; McMartin 2019), or are there other, more deep-rooted, long-standing, historical reasons behind the translation paths that Georgian literature has followed?

Having mapped the global circulation of Georgian literature in my previous research and having identified some translation zones (Roig-Sanz and Meylaerts 2018, Roig-Sanz forth.), I will inquire the reasons behind cultural relations between Georgia, as the vantage point, and Germany, and between Georgia and the relatively active translation area in the Caucasus and the Black Sea region. While I study a very contemporary object, I will take some historical distance from the ongoing events to grasp the long-standing relationships that might have made possible these flows of translations. To get a more detailed understanding, I will also look at the trajectories of the titles and the different corpuses of authors that have circulated to each area to find specificities in these relations, while also considering the figure of the cultural mediators (Roig-Sanz and Meylaerts 2018), especially translators, that are key agents in the process (Espagne 2013).

The main source for this analysis is the catalogue of Georgian titles in translation (National Parliamentary Library of Georgia), accepting that this is not an exhaustive database, but it is more complete that the Index Translationum (used by Heilbron 1999 as the basis for the world system of translations, which establishes centres and peripheries according to translation flows). Methodologically, I believe that this approach also serves to re-frame or to question the place, within the centre-periphery perspective, of those cultural areas that are usually considered minor or peripheral but are indeed a crossroad —a “juxtaposition de constructions identitaires, de nations et de langues” (Espagne, Isaxanli and Mustafayev 2019) in the case of Georgia, which challenges its definition as peripheral).

A Franco-Iranian History of Pictorial Modernism Between 1950-1970

Marjan Tajeddini

Following the arrival of modernity and modern thought in Iran, the Iranian intellectual community, faced with the dichotomy of tradition and modernity, has adopted several different approaches, which according to some theorists and historians can be divided into three general approaches: Westernization, adaptation and opposition. On the other hand, the art of painting in Iran, despite historical ruptures and foreign influences and the fusion of different and heterogeneous traditions, has maintained its cultural interpretation by preserving the inherent continuity that reflects the identity of Iranian painting and the continuity of its aesthetic essence and its cultural spirit. In this presentation, this cultural interpretation is examined through a group of Iranian modernist artists who introduced a particular type of Iranian modernism with an adaptive approach by finding original Iranian / Oriental solutions in the 1950s and 1970s (at the peak of the Pahlavi dynasty’s power and its emphasis on the glory of Ancient Persia until its decline by the Islamic Revolution).

Polysemic spagne Exchanges and Epistemic Flows: The Archipelago as a Method and Metaphor for Cultural Transfers

Gabriele Pisarz-Ramirez & Steffen Wöll

In our presentation, we will discuss how the archipelago can become a lens through which to examine spatial formats such as such as empire, homeland, and territory and reveal their global interconnections and cultural transfers. As Brian Russell Roberts and Michelle Stephens suggest in Archipelagic American Studies: Decontinentalizing the Study of American Culture, “the archipelago emerges as neither strictly natural nor as wholly cultural but always as at the intersection of the Earth’s materiality and humans’ penchant for metaphoricity.” We want to unpack this notion with examples from literary and cultural studies that exemplify the transmission of polysemic knowledges and practices through archipelagic exchanges that make visible the workings of cultural networks, nodes, and mobilities. This approach, we propose, can function as a powerful method to study the epistemic vectors that facilitate flows, transfers, and exchanges among spaces and cultures.

Transnational Lives and the (Global) Historical Imaginary in the Contemporary ‚Latin American’ Novel

Jobst Welge

The contemporary and „global“ Latin American novel is no longer or not necessarily concerned with typically Latin American issues of nationhood and identity, but it frequently exemplifies the interaction of local with global or transnational constellations. In this talk I want to present some examples from my ongoing research on transnational history in the contemporary Latin American novel. I want to argue that recent novels elaborate historical imaginaries that involve different dimensions of comparability and cultural transfer, thus suggesting a mobile sense of history, temporality, and of biographical trajectories across different nations, cultures, and languages. After a general overview of theoretical and critical contributions to the field, I will discuss symptomatic questions of transnational history with regard to autofictional memory in Argentina/Brazil (Julián Fuks, A Resistência, 2015);

Mexican-American relations (Valeria Luiselli, Lost Children Archive, 2019); and political violence between China and Colombia (Juan Gabriel Vásquez, Volver la vista atrás, 2021).

Intercultural Transfers and Processes of Respatialization

Matthias Middell

Research on intercultural transfers has led to growing awareness of entangled spaces and the circulation of knowledge and practices across (cultural) borders. While research on objects, actors, media, the various aspects of resemantization but also the many temporalities of such processes has sophisticated further and further, the spatial dimension has not yet attracted sufficiently systematic attention. The paper tries to connect the debate about different spatial formats with the discussion on intercultural transfers and to illustrate the connection along a series of examples that demonstrate the dynamics of respatialization between the late 18th century and today.

Intercultural Communication and Cultural Transfers in the Colonial Context. The Encounter between Pizarro and Atahualpa in 1532 and Its Discursive Representations in Early-Modern Cultures

Hans-Jürgen Lüsebrink

This contribution treats the historical representations of the encounter between the Inca King Atahualpa and the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro on november 16th, 1532, in the Peruvian town of Cajamarca which was one of the decisive turning points of the Spanish conquest of South America. After theoretical and methodological reflections on the relations between intercultural communication processes and cultural transfers in the context of the conquista, it focuses first on the various contemporary Spanish discourses on the event of November 16th, 1532, which represented predominantly an official ideological version of it. In a further step are analyzed the new 18th-century discourses, influenced by different historical sources, like the work of Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, which reveal very different ‘constructions’, based on a transcultural network of cultural transfers and intercultural mediators, of this event.

Geographical Societies and Their “Languages”

Ninja Steinbach-Hüther & Thomas Efer

Geographical societies can be seen as spatial entrepreneurs with a high degree of spatial literacy who since their founding phase in the 19th century tried to gain, access and transmit knowledge about world regions. The presentation will be about how to methodologically get to the “language(s), semantics and re-semantizations” they used in their journals to describe world regions and topics connected to them. Following a mixed-methods-approach, we will exemplarily demonstrate and follow some of the spatial semantics geographical societies chose over time and in different languages. This will help to see whether the use of spatial semantics intralingually and interlingually underwent changes over time or not and if so, how. Overall, it shall help to better understand spatial conditions through the lenses of geographical texts.

Unexpected Allies: The Alawites of Syria and the Baˈ-Alawites of Hadhramaut

Katrin Köster

This paper will analyse the interactions between a group of Yemeni Baˈ-Alawites and Syrian Alawites in Latakia, Syria, during the first decades of the twentieth century. The Alawites are a Shiite community, whose traditional home is the hinterland of Latakia. A group of reform minded Alawite scholars worked to modernise their community during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. These Alawite reformers found an unexpected ally in ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥusainī (d. 1975), a Baˈ-Alawite scholar. The Baˈ-Alawites of Hadhramaut, Yemen, are a group of Sayyids, that is they trace their ancestors back to the prophet’s family and consider themselves to be privy to special religious knowledge. The interaction between these two entirely different groups exemplifies how different communities/reform movements in the Arab-Islamic world cross-fertilized each other in the context of the nahḍa (arab. renaissance, revival, progress). Nahḍa is an umbrella term for reform and education movements that profoundly changed the Arab-Islamic world during the nineteenth and early twentieth century. These reform movements have long been conceptualized as the outcome of bilateral exchange processes between the Arab world and the West. New research has however shown that this concept needs to be complicated; especially autochthonous factors and interactions between different actors in the region need to be considered. Analysing the relations between the Syrian Alawite reformers and the group of Baˈ-Alawites in Latakia thus will also shed light on the interconnectivity of different actors in the region during the (late) nahḍa period and serve as a case in point for exchanges between different regional actors being one of the driving forces of the Arabic nahḍa.

Antje Dietze & Alexander Vari

As part of an ongoing transnational turn in cultural history, studies on the history of urban popular culture and the entertainment industries increasingly engage with the European or global circulation of genres, actors and shows, especially during the period of massive growth and transnational expansion of the sector from the 1870s to the 1930s. The traditional focus of popular culture histories has been on exchanges between Western European and North American metropolises such as New York, London or Paris. Other geographic areas and (trans-)regional entanglements in Europe have so far been neglected in the larger historical narratives. Our interest in a fuller picture of the emergence and cross-border transfers of popular entertainment forms the basis for an upcoming collective volume that includes cases from Northern, East-Central and Southern Europe. By looking at the mediating agents, transnational networks, and local responses to new forms of entertainment in these regions, we propose to re-focus the history of urban popular culture in Europe in view of multidirectional transfers and a wider range of experiences. One example is the transition in Hungary from the consumption of French chanson as a foreign musical genre to its adoption, adaptation, and integration as a core element of Budapest’s popular culture. Sanzon became a specifically Hungarian product in triangular popular culture exchanges between Budapest, Berlin, and Vienna, being on occasion even exported to France.

Lo que pasa a bordo. Lo que pasa en el mundo. Die Überfahrt der S.S. Sinaia nach Mexiko (1939)

Martin Schieder
