Call 2023/2024: Global Scholars in Residence program (Deadline is May 5, 2023)
Dear colleagues,
we want to bring your attention to an announcement the chancellor and provost made earlier this week: Vanderbilt has launched a new Global Scholars in Residence program, which provides funding to faculty who wish to bring accomplished international scholars to campus to contribute to our intellectual community.
I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity. We are, fortunately, in a position now where travel restrictions have lifted and we can once again collaborate with colleagues abroad. The exchange of ideas across borders, disciplines, perspectives, and cultures is valuable to faculty and students alike, expanding our understanding and strengthening our research and discovery.

Global Scholars in Residence program to welcome top international talent to campus
The Office of the Chancellor and Office of the Provost have announced funding for the new Global Scholars in Residence program. The program is part of Vanderbilt’s commitment to enhance global engagement and collaboration across the university.
Global Scholars in Residence provides financial support to faculty who want to host a visiting scholar or group of scholars from esteemed non-U.S. institutions of higher learning or nonprofits devoted to education or research. By making it easier for the world’s top scholars to visit Vanderbilt, faculty and students will benefit from a global perspective on discovery and increased opportunities for multinational collaboration.
“The Global Scholars in Residence program expands Vanderbilt’s spirit of scholarship and radical collaboration around the world,” Chancellor Daniel Diermeier said. “Not only will our faculty and students share in discovery with these visiting scholars, but each new relationship will strengthen our reputation as an undeniable global presence in research and higher education.”
The program is open to all full-time faculty employed by Vanderbilt University. While faculty are responsible for all hosting duties during a visit, they are invited to collaborate with peers on hosting duties and research and educational opportunities alike. Visiting global scholars will be accommodated in West End Tower, Vanderbilt’s signature 305-foot landmark, which offers sweeping views of Nashville.
“This initiative is one more way we are expanding and strengthening the worldwide impact of faculty discoveries and innovation,” said C. Cybele Raver, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. “I am proud to work shoulder to shoulder with other university leaders, faculty and staff to support these vibrant global partnerships.”
The Global Scholars in Residence program is accepting proposals for visits during spring 2023 and during the 2023–24 academic year. Deadlines to apply are Dec. 16, 2022, for visits during spring 2023, and May 5, 2023, for visits during the 2023–24 academic year.
Interested faculty should submit proposals that detail how the visit will:
- lay the foundation for international engagement in research and education;
- facilitate collaboration across schools, colleges or departments;
- engage faculty across rank and tenure status;
- be part of a marquee event for faculty, staff, postdocs and students; and
- include a meaningful investment from the proposer’s school, college or department.
