Le 5 janvier 2023, Micah Alpaugh (University of Central Missouri) présente son livre, Friends of Freedom. The Rise of Social Movements in the Age of Atlantic Revolutions (CUP) publié en 2022, lors d'une rencontre en ligne (sur Teams) organisée par Mathieu Ferradou (Université Paris-Nanterre) pour la Commission internationale d'histoire de la Révolution française (CIHRF). La rencontre débutera par un entretien afin de souligner les enjeux historiographiques de ce livre important, le premier à proposer une vue d'ensemble de l'émergence des mouvements patriotiques pendant l'Age des Révolutions : depuis les Sons of Liberty en passant par les réformateurs britanniques, les Volontaires irlandais, les jacobins français, les révolutionnaires haïtiens, les Irlandais Unis, jusqu'aux républicains démocrates américains, c'est un mouvement transnational que Micah Alpaugh met en lumière, montrant qu'il s'est développé par un échange constant d'idées, de pratiques et de stratégies politiques qui ont sillonné l'Atlantique de parts et d'autres, donnant naissance aux premiers mouvements sociaux de masse. Cet entretien sera suivi d'un temps d'échanges avec les participants. La rencontre aura lieu en français et en anglais.
On 5 January 2023, Micah Alpaugh (University of Central Missouri) will present his latest book, Friends of Freedom. The Rise of Social Movements in the Age of Atlantic Revolutions (CUP), published in 2022, on the occasion of an online meeting (on Teams) organized by Mathieu Ferradou (Université Paris-Nanterre) on behalf of the Commission international d'histoire de la Révolution française (CIHRF). The meeting will begin by an interview to highlight the historiographical importance of the book, the first one to propose an overview of the rise of patriotic movements during the Age of Revolutions: from the Sons of Liberty to British reformers, Irish Volunteers, French Jacobins, Haitian revolutionaries, United Irishmen, and American Republican Democrats, Micah Alpaugh sheds light on how this transnational movement rose up in a constant flow of exchanges of ideas, practices and political strategies, crisscrossing the Atlantic and giving birth to the first massive social movements. This presentation will be followed by a discussion with all participants. The meeting will be held in English and French.
