Circus of Science

The infotainment show “Circus of Science” will take place on March 01, 2023 in the Kupfersaal Leipzig.

“Jack Pop’s Circus of Science” is the evening show with brain food for nerds and noobs, for smart alecks and smart asses, for inquisitive and open-minded people.”” Selina Hanisch, a doctoral student at the b-ACTmatter Research and Transfer Center for Bioactive Matter and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research Leipzig UFZ, will report

“How a WG full of slimy bacteria is helping to shape our energy transition.”

In the energy transition, we want to move away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energies. A key element for this is hydrogen. To produce this in a “green way,” we are harnessing the unique capabilities of microbes.

The goal: to produce hydrogen using only water, air and love! How this is supposed to work?! With bacterial slime communities, so-called biofilms. There, bacterial species live together on different “floors” and interact: protecting themselves from dangers such as antibiotics, sharing food among themselves and using energy sources efficiently. These slimy layers may pave the way to technically feasible hydrogen production.

The show promises lectures complete with ad hoc experiments, showband jingles, interactive quizzes and plenty of infotainment.
