The Planetary (or Ecological) Spatial Format

Jana Moser, Sofia Gavrilova, Philipp Meyer & Sebastian Lentz (all SFB 1199 & IfL Leipzig)

The weekly colloquium of the Collaborative Research Centre provides a forum for presentations by external guests as well as by members of the SFB 1199 within a tailored thematic framework. The format helps to create a common ground for discussion between guests, the Collaborative Research Centre, as well as the wider academic public. The complete program can be found here.

This week’s discussion will be led by Jana Moser, Sofia Gavrilova, Philipp Meyer and Sebastian Lentz (all SFB 1199 & IfL Leipzig) and it will revolve around the planetary or the ecological as a new spatial format. Planetary thinking seems to be a very new “fashion”. We will introduce concepts that can be seen as precursors for this kind of spatially and thematically connected thinking and viewing. Related to this is the conscious perception of living conditions in different places on Earth and their consideration in spatial decision-making processes. We will also show how these concepts appear in the material of our sub-project, how maps as media of communication have contributed to an awareness of ecological (human ecology, not environmental ecology) knowledge and action, and how we methodically deal with this spatial format in the sub-project C05. In order to further specify the spatial format, we would like to discuss references and possible delimitations to concepts such as globalization and spatial literacy as well as a possible appearance of the spatial format in other SFB contexts.
