Prof. Dr. Annette Beck-Sickinger of the University of Leipzig recently received an award as one of the world’s most distinguished women scientists in the field of chemistry and chemical engineering. In the 2023 list of laureates of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), Beck-Sickinger is one of twelve women worldwide to be honored with this award.

The honorees were recognized on August 20, 2023, during the opening ceremony of the “IUPAC World Chemistry Congress 2023” at World Forum The Hague in the Netherlands. The awards program was established as part of the 2011 International Year of Chemistry celebrations to recognize and promote the work of women chemists/chemical engineers worldwide.

Each year since 2011, the award has gained more attention from the global community. The twelve awardees were selected based on their outstanding achievements in basic or applied research, their outstanding achievements in teaching or training, or their demonstrated leadership in the chemical sciences. The award committee was particularly interested in candidates who have demonstrated leadership and/or community service during their careers.
